Cavern or Cave?

For Memorial Day weekend, Colby, his mom and Margo decided to take a little day trip up around Mt. View to visit Blanchard Springs Caverns. The trio loaded into the car with a basket full of snacks, that the kid polished off before the car crossed the Pulaski County line. Curious as always, Colby asked all sorts of questions about Blanchard Springs Cave, and like the dumb-blonde that she can sometimes be.... Colby's mom quickly corrected him and said, "Colby, it's a cavern." We all know where the conversation went from there.... "Mom, what's the difference between a cave and a cavern?" Colby's mom gave it her best shot and tried several times to come up with an explanation; however, given the fact that the only geology course she had ever taken in her life was 20+ years prior, she finally gave up and said, "Colby, google it when you get home."
